Modern production workflows often rely heavily on compression, limiting, and clipping to achieve loudness. But perceived loudness is influenced by much more than level alone. Research and industry discussions have repeatedly shown that harmonic content, masking, and spectral balance all play a significant role in how loud and detailed audio feels to listeners.

In ourlatest experiment, HRF (Harmonic Reinforcement Filter)was used on an over-compressed indie rock mix to explore how harmonic organization can improve clarity, cohesion, dynamic articulation, and perceived loudness without simply pushing the signal harder.

The results showed increases in PLR (Peak-to-Loudness Ratio), wider dynamic movement, and a more open, punchy listening experience.

Want to learn more about the experiment and why harmonic organization may be just as important as compression?
